Following the previous successful IMAB17 (International Congress on Metals in Anaerobic Biotechnologies), it is our great pleasure to welcome you to the IMAB23-International Congress on Metal-microbe applications for circular economy to be held from April 19th-21st, 2023 in Porto, Portugal.

IMAB23 aims to present new developments on the chemical, molecular and biogeochemical mechanisms of microbial-mediated processes underpinned by metals.

Technologies for waste treatment, reduction and re-utilisation, along with resource recovery and bioenergy production, to sustain competitiveness, social well-being and the type of high environmental quality standards are necessary for modern economies.

There is increasing evidence of the relevance of metals-microorganisms’ interactions for management of contaminated waste and wastewater (e.g. industrial wastewater effluents and digestates from AD), including waste re-use and potential metal recovery approaches promoting the circular economy.

IMAB23 provides an opportunity to stay on top of the latest developments in tools, approaches and methods to identify, assess and manage trace metals in various areas of application, including industry, environmental management, societal needs and policy focusing on metal-microbe applications for circular economy.

We hope you find here many inspiring ideas and partnerships.

Some of the main topics are:

Analysis and bioavailability of metals

Microbial interactions with metal – from cells to microbial communities

Mathematical Modelling of metal-microbe interactions in biotechnologies: from cell to reactor scale

Biotechnologies for metal-microbe applications

Closing the loop for the circular economy: metal removal and recovery

We are delighted to host the conference in Porto, well known for its port wine, is Portugal’s second largest city, Its stunning Old Town on the picturesque Douro River, complete with six bridges, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll find amazing Beaux Arts and Baroque churches, palaces and other buildings scattered around the city.

Location: The city lies along the Douro River, 2 miles (3 km) from the river’s mouth on the Atlantic Ocean and 175 miles (280 km) north of Lisbon.

The conference will be organized by the University of Porto, CIIMAR and CSIC-Instituto de la Grasa.

We look forward to welcoming you to Porto in April 2023. The official language in the Congress will be English.
